TAKEAWAY TEST - Indian Chef, Crookes Road, Crookes

Published Date: 12 August 2009
GETTING a takeaway is a treat - but also an easy option, designed to be convenient when you can't be bothered to cook.

So, at less than five minutes' walk from my house, the Indian Chef in Crookes was the perfect choice for a Sunday night tea foll

owing a long journey home from a weekend away.

Quick and easy it might have been, but also tasty and enjoyable.

We started with poppadoms and dips, as well as a portion of chicken tikka pakora to share. The dips were a bit disappointing - basically consisting of chopped onion and a pot of yoghurty sauce. It would have benefited from some more diced tomato with the onion, and perhaps a pot of mango chutney to provide a bit more variety.

The pakora however were delicious - generous chunks of succulent and delicately spiced chicken, coated in a light and crispy batter.

For main course we chose a chicken karai and, keen to try a dryer kind of curry, a chef's speciality of lamb Kashmiri bhuna. The meat in this dish melted in your mouth and the caremelised onions added a new twist to your traditional bhuna. All finished off with a generous sprinkling of coriander, the result was flavoursome and satisfying.

The karai was spicier, but not too hot, and again contained generous chunks of chicken.

There were also plenty of green peppers and onions, though the sauce could perhaps have contained more tomatoes. Sides of mushroom rice and a garlic naan bread finished off the meal nicely.

The turn around was fast too - and its location just over the road from The Ball pub meant there was time of a swift drink while they prepared our meal in around 20 minutes.

The staff were also pleasant and friendly, and it was clear the takeaway and restaurant have a loyal base of regular customers who go back again and again for their favourite dishes.

I'm sure we will return, particularly the next time cooking seems too much effort and all we can manage is a three-minute stroll up the street!
